Athletic Bilbao are reportedly working to sign Nico Williams to a new contract amid talk of interest from Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

Athletic Bilbao are reportedly working to sign Nico Williams to a new contract, with the Basque outfit battling to keep hold of the Spain international during this summer's transfer window.

Williams had his injury problems during the 2024-25 campaign, but he still managed to score 11 goals and register seven assists in 45 appearances for the Lions in all competitions.

Barcelona activated the €58m (£49m) release clause in his Athletic contract last year, but the attacker decided to remain with Ernesto Valverde's side for at least another season.

There is once again speculation surrounding his future, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich believed to be among the clubs keen on the 22-year-old.

However, according to AS, Athletic are attempting to sign Williams to a new contract in the hope of preventing him from leaving San Mames during this summer's transfer window.

The report claims that Athletic are willing to hand Williams an improved contract, while the release clause in his contract could be increased.

Williams had been hopeful of leading Athletic to Europa League success during the 2024-25 campaign, but the Basque outfit were knocked out in the semi-finals by Manchester United.

The forward struggled to make his mark in the first leg of the last-four clash with the 20-time English champions before missing the return fixture with a troublesome groin issue.

Williams only actually scored five La Liga goals last season, but he is one of the most in-demand forwards in European football, with his performances for Spain at Euro 2024 showing his quality at the highest level.

Which club is the favourite for Williams?

Athletic may ultimately prove to be unsuccessful in their bid to keep hold of Williams.

Staying at San Mames is, of course, a serious possibility, but it would not be a surprise to see him move on this summer, with a switch to the Premier League or the Bundesliga seemingly on the cards.

Arsenal are thought to lead the English interest, while Bayern are being heavily linked with the Spaniard, as the German club bid to bring in a replacement for the departing Leroy Sane.
