Result: Australia set new world record in women's 4x100m freestyle final

Australia retain their Commonwealth title and break the world record in the final of the women's 4x100m freestyle at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast.

Host nation Australia have retained their Commonwealth title in the women's 4x100m freestyle courtesy of a world-record swim in the final at the Optus Aquatics Centre this evening.

The Australian team still contained three of the members who won gold in Glasgow with another world-record showing four years ago, including sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell, both of whom produced stunning legs to pull themselves clear in front of a frenzied home crowd.

The quartet, which also included Shayna Jack and Emma McKeon, touched the wall in a time of 3:30.05 - a full six-tenths of a second faster than their own previous world record set at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Canada led the way after the first leg, but they were ultimately forced to settle for second place, finishing almost four seconds behind the dominant hosts.

England were also some way adrift as they picked up bronze, four years on from claiming silver at the Glasgow Games.

England touched the wall in a time of 3:38.40, with Siobhan Marie O'Connor the only remaining member of the team from the last edition of the Commonwealths.
