He said: “It’s up there with one of the hardest I’ve ever had to win. Just because of what has transpired in the last couple of years.

“I came close last year and the chances at the last two major championships and applied what I learned at them two and managed to seal the deal today.”

Woods said of his celebrations: “Now my little boy Charlie, that embrace is just special. Sam lost a State soccer tournament yesterday so I convinced her to come up and watch the Masters and luckily I was able to win.

“It is unreal for me. My mum was here, she was there in ’97 as well. I couldn’t be more happy and excited. I’m lost for words really.”

Woods added: “It’s overwhelming. Just because of what has transpired. Last year, I was just lucky to be playing again.

“The previous champions’ dinner I was really struggling and missed a couple of years of not playing this great tournament and now to be champion, I think… 22 years between wins is a long time.

“I was as patient as I’ve ever been in a number of years out there. The last three days, the way I was plotting my way around the golf course. Kept control of my emotions, my shots, my shot placement and it all flipped at 12.

“We were a couple behind, Francesco (Molinari) made a mistake and then Brooksy (Koepka) makes a mistake and then eagles 13 and all these different scenarios start flying around.

“Patrick (Cantlay) then made a run. It was just an amazing buzz out there to try and work out what’s going out, meanwhile still trying to stay present and focus what I am trying to do out there. I kinda liked it.”

Woods explained how he tried to approach the final round and what it meant to have his family there.

He told Sky Sports Golf: “I was just trying to plod my way around the course. All day, just plod my way around and all of a sudden I had the lead. Coming up 18, it was just about trying to make a five.

“But when I tapped the putt in, I don’t know what I did. But I know I screamed. I was just looking for Joey (LaCava – Woods’ caddie) somewhere, shook the guys’ hands then found Joey.

“To have my kids there, it’s come full circle. My dad was here in ’97 and now, I’m a dad with two kids there.”
