Result: Nathan Redmond strike seals win for England Under-21s

A second-half goal from Nathan Redmond gives England Under-21s a 1-0 win over Wales Under-21s in their European Championships qualifier.

A second-half strike from Nathan Redmond has secured a 1-0 win for England Under-21s against Wales Under-21s in their 2015 European Championships qualifier this evening.

Chances were scarce in the opening spell, as Tommy O'Sullivan saw a couple of early chances miss the target, while Ravel Morrison tried a long-range effort for the Young Lions, but was unable to test the keeper.

Joe Walsh had a chance to give Wales the lead after catching England out with his pace, but the finish from Wes Burns was turned just wide.

The home side started to dominate the possession before the break, but Saido Berahino, Thomas Ince and Redmond all put shots wide.

England continued to look the more likely to find an opening goal at the start of the second half, and their persistence paid off 10 minutes after the restart as Redmond picked the ball up from Jack Robinson on the edge of the box before drilling it in with the first on-target effort of the match.

Ince tried to set Berahino up for a second 10 minutes later, delivering a cross into the box for the striker, but his header from close range went just high.

The visitors tried to get themselves back on level terms, but Burns wasted a chance when he drifted offside chasing a long goal kick from Connor Roberts.

Danny Ings almost put the result beyond doubt in the final moments of the match, blasting a powerful strike towards the Wales goal, but a solid save from Roberts ensured that the lead remained at just one goal.

The result leaves England unbeaten during their qualifying campaign.
