Real Madrid are reportedly preparing a defensive overhaul in the summer transfer window, with a double move targeting France internationals Ibrahima Konate and William Saliba.
After a 2024-25 campaign plagued by injuries and underwhelming performances, Los Blancos are eager to strengthen their backline. David Alaba has struggled to return to fitness, Antonio Rudiger is yet to rediscover his top form, Raul Asencio remains unconvincing, and Eder Militao has only just returned from a long injury layoff.
Despite these setbacks, new signing Dean Huijsen has emerged as one of the few bright spots, particularly following a strong showing at the Club World Cup. Manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly keen to pair the Spanish youngster with two high-profile reinforcements.
Real Madrid targeting France centre-back partnership
According to Marca, Real Madrid have identified Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate and Arsenal's William Saliba as their primary centre-back targets.
Konate has just one year left on his contract at Anfield and has so far refused to sign an extension. With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation still unresolved, Liverpool are wary of a repeat scenario and could be open to selling the 25-year-old this summer. His asking price has reportedly been set at around £42.5m.
Meanwhile, Saliba’s case is more complicated. Valued at approximately £68m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old is considered a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s defence at Arsenal. However, the player is said to be open to lowering his wage demands in order to secure a move to the Spanish capital.
In total, Real Madrid could be looking at a combined outlay of around £110.5m to secure both players. While Konate appears the more attainable target at this stage, the Spanish giants have not given up hope of landing Saliba as well. A formal approach could reportedly be made in the coming weeks.
