Result: Austria slump to Netherlands defeat

Austria fall to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Netherlands in their final Euro 2016 warm-up match.

Austria have capped off their Euro 2016 preparations with a 2-0 defeat to Netherlands at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna this evening.

The hosts, who dropped just two points during qualifying for this summer's tournament and were one of only four teams to reach France without losing a game, created the first opening of the match when Marko Arnautovic forced a save from Jeroen Zoet after just three minutes.

Despite a bright start from the home side, though, Netherlands were ahead as early as the ninth minute as Vincent Janssen rose highest in the area to nod home Steven Berghuis's cross.

Austria were quickly back on the attack, though, and it took two saves in quick succession from Zoet to keep Marcelo Koller's side out just three minutes after the opening goal.

David Alaba was the next to come close midway through the half when he fired over for the hosts, who will face Hungary, Portugal and Iceland in Group F this summer.

Despite Austria creating the bulk of the chances, Netherlands came within inches of doubling their advantage when Quincy Promes saw his effort come back off the post with only 10 minutes remaining of the first half.

The visitors, who will not be at this summer's tournament following a disastrous qualifying campaign, threatened again after the restart when Janssen collected Kenny Tete's cross only to fire over the bar when well placed.

Austria went straight up the other end and almost levelled things up seconds later as Alaba raced through on goal, but Zoet was there to thwart the Bayern Munich defender.

Promes then came close with another effort on the hour mark, but Danny Blind would not have to wait much longer for his side to grab a second as Georginio Wijnaldum picked out the corner after Promes and Luuk de Jong had combined to find the Newcastle United man.

Zoet was again called upon to make an important contribution with just under 20 minutes remaining, but that was to be his last piece of action before being forced off with a knee injury.

Promes almost made it three for the visitors with seven minutes remaining, but the latter stages of the match were disrupted by a number of substitutions as Netherlands saw out the win fairly comfortably.

Austria will now turn their attentions to their opening Euro 2016 game, which comes against Hungary on June 14.
