Charlie Nicholas admits that he is surprised that Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has chosen Scotland over England.

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has admitted that he is baffled by Scott McTominay's decision to choose Scotland over England.

The Manchester United midfielder has become a more regular feature in Jose Mourinho's team, and at the age of 21, he has opted to pick his national team allegiance.

Despite being born in England, McTominay has reportedly chosen to represent the country where his father was born.

"I'm surprised that he has chosen Scotland as I honestly didn't think he would," Sky Sports News quotes Nicholas as saying.

"It is tough to say until we hear what he has to say about it but if you believe in yourself and your ability then I would have thought it would be a fairly straightforward decision to choose England.

"He was born in England and sounds like he's English so I'm not sure how having a Scottish father is a stronger reason than where you are from. It sounds like his father has picked it more than him."

The youngster has made 15 appearances in all competitions for United so far this season.
