Edinson Cavani is out of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Southampton due to a groin injury.

Manchester United interim head coach Ralf Rangnick has revealed that a groin injury has ruled Edinson Cavani out of Saturday's Premier League clash with Southampton.

The Uruguay international started against Burnley in the league on Tuesday and was expected to be involved in the game with the Saints at Old Trafford.

However, the 34-year-old was a notable absentee when the squad was announced ahead of kickoff.

Rangnick has revealed that "groin problems" have forced the South American to pull out of the squad, and it is unclear whether he will be available for Tuesday's Premier League match with Brighton & Hove Albion.

"I decided to start with Cristiano [Ronaldo] today in the home game. Edi, unfortunately, had to pull out after training last night," Rangnick told MUTV. "It was some groin problems. He had treatment the whole night and the whole morning but, in the end, he just said he's not available."

Cavani - out of contract at the end of June - has scored twice and registered one assist in 15 appearances for the 20-time English champions during the 2021-22 campaign.
