Manchester City reach the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a narrow 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in Wednesday's third-round tie at The Hawthorns.

Manchester City have reached the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a narrow 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in Wednesday's third-round tie at The Hawthorns.

Leroy Sane was the hero for Pep Guardiola's side as he struck a brace at the beginning and near the end of the match, either side of Claudio Yacob's equaliser for the Baggies.

The Germany winger opened the scoring just three minutes in as he was in the right place at the right time to hammer a rebound into the Baggies' net after Ilkay Gundogan had forced a save from Ben Foster.

Hal Robson-Kanu then had the ball in the back of the City net seven minutes later, but the goal was disallowed for Grzegorz Krychowiak's foul on Gundogan in the build-up.

The visitors imposed themselves on their opponents for the remainder of the first half, but Eliaquim Mangala, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling all failed with their efforts as they took their slender one-goal lead into the break.

City's wastefulness could have proved costly as West Brom drew level through Yacob, who was perfectly positioned to tap home Kieran Gibbs's corner in the 72nd minute.

However, Sane grabbed his second of the game just six minutes later when he finished off a swift counterattack to curl the ball beyond Foster and into the bottom corner of the Baggies net.
