Liverpool announce that former striker David Johnson - who won three European Cups with the Reds in the 1970s and 80s - has died at the age of 71.

Former Liverpool striker David Johnson has died at the age of 71, the club has confirmed.

Johnson spent six years at Liverpool between 1976 and 1982, making 213 appearances for the Reds in all competitions and coming up with 73 goals.

The former England international formed a part of the Reds' dominant team of the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning three European Cups and four top-flight titles.

Johnson also scooped the UEFA Super Cup, two EFL Cups and four Community Shields at Anfield, while he played eight times for England and scored six goals.

"Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of David Johnson. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with David's family and friends at this very sad time," a statement from Liverpool read.

Johnson came through the youth system at Everton before joining Ipswich Town in 1972, where he spent four years before making the switch to Liverpool.

The striker returned to Everton in 1982 and also represented Manchester City, Roughnecks and Preston North End before hanging up his boots in 1985, and he was inducted into the Ipswich Hall of Fame in 2016.
