Sports Mole previews Friday's League of Ireland Premier clash between Galway United and Waterford United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Waterford United will be bidding to make it three straight wins in all competitions when they continue their League of Ireland Premier Division campaign with an away game against Galway United on Friday.

The hosts are currently eighth in the League of Ireland Premier Division table, boasting 29 points from their 24 league fixtures this term, while Waterford are seventh, one point ahead of their opponents here on the same number of games.



Match preview

Galway United have a record of seven wins, eight draws and nine defeats from their 24 league matches this season, with a total of 29 points leaving them in eighth position in the table, six points ahead of ninth-placed Sligo Rovers.

John Caulfield's side were 2-0 winners over Tolka in the FAI Cup last time out, but they are on a poor run of form in the league, including a 3-0 defeat to Bohemians in their last clash on July 11.

Galway United have not managed to collect all three points in the top flight since June 20, and finding the back of the net has been an issue this term, only managing 27 in their 24 league encounters.

At home, Caulfield's team have 17 points from their 11 league fixtures this term, and they will be welcoming a Waterford outfit that 13 points to show from their 12 away matches on their travels during the current season.

As for Waterford, John Coleman's side will enter this match off the back of a 5-1 success over St Mochtas in the FAI Cup, while they beat Cork City 2-0 in their last league fixture.

A total of nine wins, three draws and 12 defeats from 24 matches has brought them 30 points, which is enough for seventh spot in the table, one point ahead of their opponents in this match.

Waterford are actually six-time League of Ireland champions, with their last success in the division coming in 1973, but they did recently win the League of Ireland First Division, lifting the trophy in 2017.

The Blues, who were seventh in the top flight last term, beat Galway United 1-0 in their last meeting on May 9, but Caulfield's side have actually won three of their last four matches at this level of football.

Team News

Waterford United striker Padraig Amond on September 30, 2020

Galway United will again be without the services of Moses Dyer through suspension, while Jimmy Keohane is unavailable for selection due to an injury problem.

David Hurley has scored three times from midfield this season, and he will feature in the starting side, while there are expected to be spots in the final third of the field for both Malcolm Shaw and Stephen Walsh.

As for Waterford, Kacper Radkowski and Matty Smith will miss the match due to injury issues.

Padraig Amond has been in excellent form during the current season, scoring 12 times in 26 appearances, and there will once again be a spot in the final third of the field for the 37-year-old.

Tommy Lonergan and Conan Noonan have also been standout performers for the team in the final third, and the pair will be in the starting XI for the clash with Galway United on Friday night.
