2020 was a big disappointment for many sports fans who had to watch from home instead of the stands. Here are six moments we wish we'd been there for.

6 Moments That Shook Sports Fans

In 2020, it was almost hard to be surprised by anything — it was a year of unprecedented events around the world. Sports leagues had to halt games because of the pandemic, and many teams still aren't playing in front of live crowds. Everyone from online casino sports bettors to casual hometown fans felt the pain of not seeing their favourite teams play in person. Here are six big sport moments of 2020 that we wish we'd been in the stands for, and a review of events that were skipped altogether.

1. Liverpool take the Premier League

For the first time in 30 years, Liverpool fans saw their team take the Premiere League in the 2020 season. The victory was a bit less sweet because of the timing — right as they were about to win, the season was put on hiatus because of the start of the pandemic. But as soon as it was back, the Reds got what was theirs, beating Chelsea 5-3 in the decisive July match. They hoisted the coveted trophy to an empty stadium, while fans round England and the world cheered on from home.

2. Lewis Hamilton makes F1 history

In the world of F1, 35-year-old Lewis Hamilton is making history. He got his impressive seventh world title in a very rainy Turkish Grand Prix. The respected Mercedes driver is as much of a personality as he is a force to be reckoned with, and he's quickly become legendary in the sport, now holding the most championship titles of any British driver.

3. Scotland reach Euro 2020

Scotland football fans haven't seen their team reach a major tournament since 1998. But thanks to a heroic penalty shoot-out in a November qualifier match against Serbia, they'll be headed to their first major finals in over 20 years. Scotland's goalkeeper David Marshall was the hero of the night when he saved a penalty shot by Aleksandar Mitrovic to take the game. The victory brought Scotland to a nine-game unbeaten run, their best since the 1970s. Fans hope to be back in the stands for the European Championship next summer.

4. A huge Barcelona upset

Barcelona fans might have been happy they weren't in the stand for the August match against Bayern Munich. Barca were humiliated in the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, losing 8-2. Bayern went on to win the 2020 Champions League final, while the Barcelona team are trying to decide how to move forward, amid rumours that star player Messi may soon depart.

5. US players take a stand

The US, which was hit particularly hard by the coronavirus, has also been in turmoil due to the Black Lives Matter movement, particularly in the face of police brutality. Sports teams used their influence to take a stand for the movement, including walk-offs, demonstrations and kneeling across football, basketball, and baseball leagues.

6. England win the 2020 Six Nations

Rugby fans had to wait longer than usual for the results of the 2020 Six Nations Championship. The matches were postponed due to the pandemic, with the final games played in October. England ended up winning their 39th overall title, with a 4-1 record.

Cancelled events

Of course, the biggest sporting events fans missed this year were the ones that never even happened. While some leagues were able to reschedule their matches, many weren't able to complete tournaments by the end of the year.

The most notable case was the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were set to take place in Tokyo. If all goes well, they will hopefully be held in summer of 2021, giving hundreds of athletes from around the world a second chance to take medals for their home countries.

We also missed events like the Grand Slam tennis tournament at Wimbledon, though tennis fans still got to enjoy many events such as the French Open, US Open, and European Open.

As we move into 2021, fans are hopeful that they'll get back in the stands soon to safely cheer on their favourite teams.
