Derby County could groundshare with either Leicester City or Stoke City in order to complete a proposed takeover, according to a report.

The EFL released a statement on Thursday evening confirming that a takeover of the Rams was nearing completion, with American businessman Chris Kirchner the current frontrunner.

However, one potential stumbling block remains around Pride Park, which was sold by the club in controversial circumstances under previous owner Mel Morris back in 2018.

To have a takeover deal approved by the EFL, a club is required to own or lease its own ground, which has led to the option of a groundshare with either fellow Midlands side Leicester or Stoke being explored, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

Derby will play the 2022-23 campaign in League One as long as the club is able to exit administration following a hopeful confirmed sale, after Wayne Rooney's side were relegated from the Championship owing to a 21-point deduction in relation to the club's financial difficulties.

Although a takeover by Kirchner nears a completion, the American's exclusivity period with Derby's administrators Quantuma ends on Saturday.
