Chelsea are reportedly preparing to test the resolve of Barcelona with an offer of at least £43m for one of their emerging stars.

Chelsea are reportedly contemplating whether to make another statement of intent during the summer transfer window with an offer for a Barcelona star

On Sunday night, the Premier League giants were crowned world champions as they outclassed Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States.

Joao Pedro, who netted three times in the semi-finals and final, and Jamie Gittens have also been acquired by the Blues with the club's recruitment team attempting to form a squad more suited to Enzo Maresca's needs.

Depending on which players are moved on between now and the start of September, there is an argument that Maresca does not require any more fresh faces ahead of 2025-26.

However, according to Fichajes, Chelsea have identified Fermin Lopez as a potential addition if they can agree terms with Barcelona.

Chelsea planning Fermin bid

The report alleges that are prepared to bid in excess of €50m (£43.4m) in order to win the race for the La Masia graduate.

Barcelona, for their part, have no intention of cashing in on the 22-year-old at this point in time with the versatile midfielder having become a regular part of the squad.

Last season, the Spain international contributed eight goals and 10 assists from 46 appearances in all competitions, numbers that will have only impressed Hansi Flick.

With Fermin able to play in central midfield, the number 10 role and the left flank, he will be deemed a valuable part of a club that continues to suffer financial issues.

Nevertheless, Chelsea are of the opinion that Barcelona officials could be tempted into cashing in on a homegrown talent to make considerable progress in complying with the relevant financial regulations.

Is Fermin a better fit for Barcelona or Chelsea?

Having started his youth days at Barcelona back in 2016, Fermin has an affinity to the La Liga champions and ideally wants to continue his career at the club.

That said, it is reported that his representatives are prepared to consider any proposals that come their way should he remain as a backup player.

Just 19 of his 46 appearances came from the starting lineup in 2024-25 and there is no immediate prospect of that improving next season.

On the flip side, though, it would likely be no different at Chelsea. Maresca already has an array of options for the number 10 role and left flank.

Fermin may have played games for Barcelona in central midfield, but he would not dislodge any of Chelsea's star names in that role.
