Pep Guardiola vs. Thomas Tuchel head-to-head record

Sports Mole takes a look at the head-to-head record between Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel will lock horns in the Champions League final on Saturday night, as Manchester City take on Chelsea in Porto.

Guardiola will be looking to win a third Champions League trophy as manager, with Man City going in search of their first European Cup.

Tuchel is searching for his first Champions League crown, but the German led Paris Saint-Germain to last season's final and has certainly impressed since taking charge of Chelsea earlier this year.

Guardiola and Tuchel will be locking horns for the eighth time in their respective careers this weekend, and there have been some fascinating battles between the two managers in the past.

The head-to-head record is led by Guardiola, who has won four of the contests to Tuchel's two, while there has also been one draw, which came when the pair were at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Here, Sports Mole takes a close look at the previous seven meetings between the two individuals, only two of which have come with their current sides.

1. Bayern Munich 4-1 Mainz (19/10/2013)

The first meeting between the two managers came back in 2013, when Guardiola was at Bayern and Tuchel was in charge of Mainz. In truth, it was a comfortable game for Guardiola's side, with Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Mario Mandzukic on the scoresheet.

Tuchel actually spent five years at Mainz, winning 72 of his 182 matches in charge of the Bundesliga outfit before moving to Borussia Dortmund. Guardiola, meanwhile, spent three years at the Allianz Arena, winning three Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal trophies.

2. Mainz 0-2 Bayern Munich (22/03/2014)

Mainz did not get too much change out of Bayern in the reverse match during the 2013-14 campaign, as goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze secured a 2-0 victory.

Tuchel left Mainz at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, while Guardiola comfortably secured the Bundesliga title, winning the trophy with an incredible seven matches to spare.

3. Bayern Munich 5-1 Borussia Dortmund (04/10/2015)

Guardiola made it three straight wins over Tuchel, as his Bayern side recorded a thumping 5-1 win over Dortmund in the Bundesliga in October 2015.

In truth, it was an incredibly tough match for BVB, who struggled to deal with Bayern duo Muller and Robert Lewandowski during an excellent performance from the hosts at the Allianz Arena.

4. Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Bayern Munich (05/03/2016)

Tuchel secured his first point against Guardiola in March 2016, with Dortmund holding Bayern to a goalless draw. Dortmund, who came closest to scoring through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, were actually in the Bundesliga title picture entering this match, but the draw ensured that their rivals retained a healthy lead.

5. Bayern Munich 0-0 Borussia Dortmund (Bayern win 4-3 on penalties, 21/5/2016)

The fifth meeting between Guardiola and Tuchel came in the 2016 DFB-Pokal final, with Bayern running out 4-3 winners on penalties following a goalless draw. Guardiola was to leave in the coming months, while Tuchel stayed at Dortmund for another season.

The result meant that Guardiola went unbeaten in his first five meetings with Tuchel, all of which came in Germany, but the tide has turned since both managers arrived in the Premier League.

6. Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City (17/04/2021)

Tuchel and Guardiola's first clash in England came in the FA Cup semi-finals, with Chelsea running out a 1-0 winners courtesy of a strike from Hakim Ziyech.

There was to be disappointment for the Blues in the final, though, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leicester City, meaning that Tuchel was denied the chance to pick up some domestic silverware in his first season.

7. Manchester City 1-2 Chelsea (08/05/2021)

Chelsea put in an excellent performance at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month to pick up all three points in their Premier League clash, with the capital side running out 2-1 winners.

Raheem Sterling sent Man City ahead before Sergio Aguero missed a penalty, but Chelsea responded in the second half, levelling through Ziyech before Marcos Alonso netted a late winner.

Guardiola enjoyed the success in Germany, but Tuchel has now secured back-to-back wins over the Spaniard, and he will be desperate to land his first European Cup as manager this weekend.
