The Football Association will reportedly investigate homophobic tweets sent by Burnley striker Andre Gray four years ago.

The Football Association will investigate homophobic tweets sent out by Burnley striker Andre Gray four years ago, according to reports.

Gray scored his first Premier League goal for the Clarets during their 2-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday, but saw his old tweets shared across social media shortly afterwards.

The 25-year-old has since apologised for his comments, made while still playing non-League football for Hinckley United, but PA reports that the FA will still look into the messages.

English football's governing body has previously handed out retrospective punishments for comments on social media, most recently giving Coventry City's Chris Stokes a one-match ban for homophobic remarks on Twitter a month earlier.

The likes of Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand and Robert Huth have also incurred fines or bans for comments made on social media.
