Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has 'confirmed' that his club are currently in talks with Borussia Dortmund over the sale of Mario Gotze.

Gotze joined Bayern from Dortmund in the summer of 2013, but has largely struggled to make his mark at the Allianz and is widely expected to leave the German champions before the start of the new campaign.

Dortmund have been strongly linked with a move for the 24-year-old in recent days and Rummenigge has revealed that the two clubs are now locked in negotiations for the German international.

"I can confirm that talks with Borussia Dortmund have taken place," Rummenigge told Sport1. "There have also been talks with his agent, but the deal is not done just yet. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement over a transfer fee first.

"Gotze has been at Bayern for three years and it did not work out for him. I am not surprised that Gotze wants to leave. He is 24 years old and needs to play regularly."

It is understood that Bayern want £19m for a player that will be out of contract next summer.
