Lionel Messi is recalled to the Barcelona starting lineup for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie with Roma.

Lionel Messi has been recalled to the Barcelona starting lineup for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie with Roma.

The forward sat out the recent international period through injury but after coming off the bench against Sevilla at the weekend, the Argentine is recalled by Ernesto Valverde.

Messi will partner Luis Suarez in attack, with Ousmane Dembele having to make do with a place among the replacements, while Sergi Roberto is moved into midfield.

Nelson Semedo has been brought back into the team by Valverde, with the right-back making his first start since February 24.

As for Roma, Lorenzo Pellegrini is the player who has been selected to replace Radja Nainggolan, who sustained an injury at the end of March.

Edin Dzeko leads the line for the Italian side, but Stephan El Shaarawy is only named on the substitutes' bench.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Umtiti, Alba; Busquets, Iniesta, Roberto, Rakitic; Suarez, Messi
Subs: Cillessen, D.Suarez, Dembele, Paulinho, Alcacer, Gomes, Vermaelen

Roma: Alisson; Peres, Fazio, Manolas, Kolarov; Strootman, De Rossi, Pellegrini; Florenzi, Perotti, Dzeko
