Arsenal could complete the signing of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres at some stage this weekend, according to multiple reports.
Since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's acrimonious exit from the Emirates Stadium in February 2022, Arsenal supporters have been craving the arrival of a new centre-forward to boost the club’s hopes of winning their first Premier League title in over two decades.
The Gunners have indeed prioritised the addition of a striker this summer, but finalising a deal for the right target has somewhat dragged on in a transfer window that has seen midfield duo Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, winger Noni Madueke and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga all join the club thus far.
Arsenal have explored conditions for a number of players, including Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko, but they have decided to pursue a big-money deal for Gyokeres instead under the guidance of new sporting director Andrea Berta.
Negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting were initially held up due to a difference in valuation of the striker and a dispute between the Sweden international and Sporting president Federico Varandas.
Despite suggestions that Manchester United could hijack the deal, Arsenal have now reached an agreement with the Primeira Liga champions to sign Gyokeres for an initial €63.5m (£55.1m) plus €10m (£8.7m) in add-ons.
Gyokeres to arrive in London on Friday to finalise Arsenal transfer
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Gyokeres can now be considered as a new Arsenal player, as every document has been approved and exchanged between both clubs.
Romano adds that Gyokeres is set to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours, while Sky Sports News claims that the 27-year-old is expected in London on Friday to sort the remaining contractual details with Arsenal.
Gyokeres is set to put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Arsenal and their plan is for the Sweden international to join up with Arteta’s squad in Singapore for pre-season.
Sporting signed Gyokeres from Championship outfit Coventry City for around £21m in the summer of 2023 and he has since elevated his game to new heights in Portugal, establishing himself as one of the deadliest strikers in Europe.
In two seasons at Sporting, Gyokeres has scored an astonishing 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese giants who have won back-to-back Primeira Liga titles and one Taca de Portugal thanks to the Swede.
Gyokeres, who netted 54 goals in 52 games last season, would be expected to slot straight into Arteta’s starting lineup and could make his competitive debut for the Gunners away against Man United on the opening weekend of the 2025-26 Premier League season, should his move to North London be finalised.
