Arsenal remain interested in signing Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, according to a report.

Arsenal are reportedly still interested in signing Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa and could reignite their interest during the January transfer window.

The Gunners were heavily linked with the Brazilian on transfer deadline day, and it is believed that the North London club had at least two offers for the midfielder turned down.

Mikel Arteta's side are believed to be planning to be active at the start of 2023, and according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Luiz remains a target for the Premier League leaders.

"Douglas Luiz remains in the list but nothing has been decided yet for January," Romano wrote in his column for CaughtOffside.

The 24-year-old's current deal is due to expire at the end of June, and Villa boss Steven Gerrard recently said that 'nothing had changed' regarding a potential extension.

"No news in terms of him extending his stay here, so that situation hasn't changed. But what I would say is he is very focused, he has trained well," Gerrard told reporters last week.

"Am I surprised by the speculation? No, because we have got a young Brazilian player who is a fantastic talent. I expect to be asked this question a lot as the season progresses.

"We want him to stay here. I think the owners were very strong in keeping him here. We didn't want to lose him on the final day and he's performed very well since."

Luiz has scored twice in eight appearances for Villa this season, while he has provided seven goals and eight assists in 119 matches for the club since arriving from Manchester City in 2019.

Romano also claimed that Arsenal looked at Danilo over the summer as a midfield option, but a deal for the 21-year-old was "never close to being completed".

"Danilo is one of the players that Arsenal have tracked during the summer but it was never close to being completed, Palmeiras wanted more than €35m (£30.6m) for him," wrote the journalist.

Danilo, who has more than four years left to run on his current deal, has made 132 appearances for Palmeiras in all competitions, contributing 12 goals and 10 assists in the process.

A number of clubs are believed to be tracking the defensive midfielder, with his Brazilian side likely to find it difficult to keep hold of him on a long-term basis.

Arsenal are currently at the top of the Premier League table with 21 points to show from their opening eight matches, but they will switch their attention to the Europa League on Thursday evening, welcoming Bodo/Glimt to the Emirates Stadium.
