Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hails the Gunners fans for "transforming" the mood of the club after a 1-0 win over Chelsea sent them back to the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that Gunners fans have "transformed" the mood of the team following their 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The North London club were under immense pressure to take all three points home after Manchester City's late win over Fulham sent them to the top of the table on Saturday.

Arsenal were deserved winners over Chelsea, though, as Gabriel Magalhaes met Bukayo Saka's corner to score the only goal of the game in the 63rd minute.

The victory marked Arsenal's third in a row over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and ensured that they would end the weekend two points clear of Manchester City at the top.

Arsenal and Arteta immediately went to celebrate with their fans at the full-time whistle, and the Spaniard - whose son joined in with the away end pandemonium - hailed Gooners' impact on the club's brilliant start to the season in his post-match press conference.

"Our supporters have been absolutely phenomenal. They have transformed the mood of the club, that's my opinion, and they have transferred the belief of the players," Arteta told reporters, as quoted by football.london.

"To share that with them at the end there is really special. I had my family there, I had my son there in the middle of the crowd so it was really great."

Graham Potter's men were second best throughout the afternoon, but Arsenal's defensive duo of Gabriel and man-of-the-match William Saliba stood firm at the back throughout the 90 minutes.

Ben White also enjoyed another fine outing on the right flank, and Arteta could not praise his backline enough, saying of Gabriel and Saliba: "I think that pair again they were outstanding both of them.

"That's why we sustained it really well, especially when we had to defend open spaces, which is very difficult, again in this place, to do what we demand they do, but I think they did it really well."

On White, Arteta added: "I am really happy with him. He is playing in different positions. I think he is acclimating himself in a great way to that full-back position.

"His understanding with the players around him is top and I really like him. He always wants to be there, he trains every single day, he plays under any circumstances and I love the boy."

When asked if White deserved to be in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup, Arteta added: "That is not for me to decide. If he does I will be so happy for him because he deserves it."

Arsenal's win on Sunday represented the first time since 1974 that they have secured three straight wins over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, as well as marking the first time ever that they have won three Premier League London derbies in a row away from home without conceding.

The Gunners now turn their attention to Wednesday's EFL Cup showdown with Brighton & Hove Albion before meeting Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final game before the World Cup.
