FIFA confirms that it has lifted a threat to suspend Nigeria from international football as the country recognised Amaju Pinnick, the head of its national federation.

FIFA has lifted a threat to suspend Nigeria from international football as the country recognised the head of its national federation.

The governing body has received assurances that "legitimate leadership" of Nigeria's football federation is restored to power and has control of its offices.

Amaju Pinnick, who was elected head of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2014, was in a standoff with Chris Giwa, who had appealed the result and won a favourable court ruling in June.

FIFA rules prohibit interference in how elected officials run football federations under threat of teams and administrators being suspended from international games and meetings.

"The suspension of the NFF will not take effect," FIFA said in a statement.

"FIFA received confirmations that the legitimate leadership of the NFF under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has been given back effective control of the NFF and its offices."

Nigeria, who were eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage in Russia, are scheduled to play a 2019 Cup of Nations qualifier on September 7 in the Seychelles.
