Sam Allardyce's first game in charge of struggling Sunderland was a trip to West Bromwich Albion, who had not won at home all season.
The lowly Black Cats were after their first win of the season, home or away, at The Hawthorns but they could not find it as Saido Berahino's scrappy goal proved the difference in a game of few chances.

5 minKaboul has been the subject of plenty of ridicule this season, but he's just done really well to thwart Berahino as the Englishman looked to spring forward.
9 minBOOKING! First yellow card inside 10 minutes is shown to Craig Dawson for sliding in and bringing down Gomez. The Baggies defender isn't happy but you can see why Martin Atkinson, today's referee, gave it.
11 minCertainly an encouraging start for Sunderland and they have their best chance of the match as Fletcher pokes goalwards from a narrow angle, with Evans making a crucial block to divert it out for a corner.
12 minSAVE! Myhill keeps the score level with an excellent save from Jones's stooped close-range header. West Brom failed to clear their lines from a corner and you would have backed Jones to nod home there.
