Sunderland want to sign 22-year-old Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson as a replacement for the wantaway Lamine Kone, according to reports.

Sunderland have expressed an interest in signing Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has only been with the Tykes for 12 months, but in that time he has helped the club win both the Football League Trophy and earn promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs.

According to the Daily Mail, Black Cats boss Moyes wants to sign a new defender after Lamine Kone refused the club's offer of a new contract, and has turned to Mawson after Brighton & Hove Albion refused to sell highly-rated centre back Lewis Dunk.

Mawson scored seven goals in 48 league appearances for Barnsley last season and also helped to keep 16 clean sheets.
