Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says that his side lacked a cutting edge in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has bemoaned his side's lack of cutting edge during Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

The Citizens suffered a 1-0 defeat in their 2021-22 opener at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Son Heung-min finding the back of the net in the early stages of the second period.

Guardiola said that "football is goals" when questioned on the contest, but the Spaniard is confident that his side will improve once their full complement of players are available for selection.

"We allowed them too much, we could not control it, especially the simple thing when you lose the passes in certain positions it is always more difficult. Football is goals, Son Heung-min scored the goal, we could not," Guardiola told BBC Sport.

"It is normal for a season with not much preparation. The spirit was good but we lost. I am more than surprised how good we have done many things. A lot of players arrived too late for Euros, for Covid, for many things. Players come back and every week will be better."

Man City also lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the Community Shield on August 7 and will be looking to avoid a third straight defeat when they host Norwich City in the league on August 21.
