Nuno urges caution as Wolves continue strong start

Wolves have lost just once in their opening seven games back in the Premier League.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo insists Wolves must remain grounded as their fine start continued following victory over Southampton.

Ivan Cavaleiro scored with his first touch in the Premier League before Jonny Otto added a late second to hand Wolves a clinical 2-0 victory in an even game at Molineux.

Cavaleiro, who missed the start of the season with a back injury, was on the pitch for just 94 seconds to help Wolves rise to eighth in the table and they have lost just once this season.

He said: “We are happy knowing it’s only the start. There’s a long way to go and we have to improve.

“Southampton really put us against the ropes, it’s not easy and tough moments will arrive and we have to be ready for it.

“Whether we deserved it or not, you never know. We know we are ready and able to adapt to any scenario, even when you are not having the ball.

“If you asked if we deserved to win I would say yes, probably Mark Hughes would say no. That’s the game and that’s football.”

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate until Cavaleiro, making his Premier League debut, was teed up by Raul Jimenez to ram in with 11 minutes left.

Jonny then prodded in Matt Doherty’s cutback with three minutes remaining but Nuno reserved praise for Cavaleiro.

“On Tuesday (against Leicester in the Carabao Cup) he made a good 55 minutes, he is coming back, today he came on from the bench and helped the team,” he said.

“When a player comes in he must do his task and help the team. He did it well. This is the spirit we want to build, when everyone is committed.”

Southampton more than held their own at Molineux and Rui Patricio saved from Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

But they were undone at the end and sit 15th in the table and boss Hughes said: “Frustration is the emotion we are feeling.

“We came here with good intent. We have had better possession stats, better shots on target stats but the only one which counts is 2-0 at the top of the page.

“We are disappointed with the manner of the goals, they clearly could have been avoided.

“We were fully engaged against a good Wolves side. We have to be more dynamic in both boxes, we need that little bit of luck.

“You can stick with it for so long but at some point you have to make a change to stimulate the group.”
