Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand admits that the club's Premier League relegation dogfight has been a "wake-up call".

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has described the club's Premier League relegation dogfight as a "wake-up call".

The Saints all but preserved their top-flight status with a 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Swansea City on Tuesday night.

The result put Mark Hughes's side three points clear of the relegation zone with a far superior goal difference to the Swans, the only team left that can still catch them.

"It wasn't necessarily an ideal season but having seen the progress that Southampton have made year after year you possibly get a bit complacent on and off the field," Bertrand told Sky Sports News.

"It was kind of like a wake-up call that maybe we needed as a whole and hopefully we can analyse all of those things and hopefully move on again next season."

Swansea have to beat Stoke City on the final day and hope that Southampton lose to Manchester City, with a 10-goal swing taking place, for the south coast side to be relegated.
