Atletico Madrid welcomed Real Madrid to the Vicente Calderon in the first leg of their last-16 Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday.
Both sides had half-chances in what was an open first period, but neither could break the deadlock.
Atletico took the lead just before the hour mark, however, when Raul Garcia scored from the penalty spot.
The hosts then doubled their lead after 76 minutes through Jose Gimenez to secure a 2-0 lead ahead of the second leg.

This trophy comes third in both sides' priorities this season, but matches between these two sides are always extremely special. Kickoff is not until 8pm UK time this evening, but be sure to remain with us for all of the build-up.
6.34pmJust in case you are unfamiliar with the format of the Copa del Rey – it can be tricky at times – nothing will be decided this evening. They like their two-legged ties even in the early stages of this particular competition and therefore progression into the next round will not be sealed until the return leg at the Bernabeu, which will take place next Thursday. The winner could meet Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
6.37pmIncidentally, the team news is expected in around 15 minutes or so, but Atletico boss Diego Simeone confirmed on Tuesday that Fernando Torres would indeed make his second debut for the capital club. For Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti is expected to hand opportunities to a number of squad players.
6.40pmIn total, Atletico and Real Madrid have met 40 times in the Copa del Rey, with Los Blancos winning 17 times to Atletico's 10. Last season, Real recorded a 5-0 aggregate win to advance to the final, where they beat Barcelona. However, in the 2012-13 season, Atletico won the final against their rivals.
6.43pmFor a long time, clashes between these two sides meant more in terms of the city than the overall picture, but that is simply not the case anymore. Atletico beat Real Madrid to the league title last season, while the pair also met in the final of the Champions League, with Real winning in extra-time.

6.46pmIn terms of the recent meetings between the two sides, Atletico have won two of the last five matches, with Real Madrid winning just once and the further match ending in a draw. The two sides have already met in the league this season, with Atletico winning 2-1 at the Bernabeu back in September.
6.49pmBefore their September meeting, the two sides also faced off in the Spanish Super Cup. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu, before Atletico won 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon to claim the trophy. Atletico were supposed to fall away this season, but they have clearly not read the script.
6.53pmIn terms of both sides' progression to this stage of the competition, Atletico overcame L'Hospitalet 5-2 on aggregate in the last round, while Real Madrid were 9-1 winners over Cornella. As touched upon earlier, this trophy is not the main priority for these two teams, but it is still extremely important.

On Saturday, Simeone's side won 3-1 at home to Levante to move onto 38 points, but they would not have expected what followed. Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Valencia, before Barcelona suffered a 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad to throw the title race wide open once again. It is hotting up very nicely indeed in La Liga.

However, Carlo Ancelotti's side were beaten 4-2 by AC Milan in a friendly last week, before suffering defeat at Valencia. Can they bounce back here?

At the moment, Real Madrid are still in a strong position despite a disappointing weekend.

7.18pmAs mentioned, Cristiano Ronaldo is only on the bench for Real Madrid tonight. As a result, James Rodriguez has moved into a forward position, opening up a spot in midfield for Sami Khedira. Alvaro Arbeloa replaces Dani Carvajal at right-back, while Keylor Navas starts in goal in place of Iker Casillas.

7.25pmAs touched upon, before defeat at Valencia, Real Madrid had been on an incredible 22-match winning run in all competitions. That run started after their 2-1 defeat at home to Atletico earlier in the season. Incredibly, that result left Los Blancos with just three points from their first three league games.
7.28pmSuddenly it clicked for Ancelotti and his side, however, with their incredible run seeing the club breeze through their Champions League group, move to the top of the table and advance in the Copa del Rey. Oh, they also won the Club World Cup in Morocco towards the end of last month.
7.31pmLast season Ancelotti delivered a 10th European Cup for Real Madrid and it would be fair to say that they are the favourites to claim the trophy once again. No side in the modern era has ever retained the Champions League, but you just get the feeling that this squad is equipped to do just that.
7.34pmReal Madrid could be forgiven for thinking that such a long winning run would have placed them in a very strong position in the league, but Barcelona and Atletico have both kept picking up vital points. When the Champions League returns next month, matters will surely hot up once again.
7.37pmDespite positive results in their last two matches, Atletico were on a mini-slump last month as they lost at home to Villarreal before drawing 2-2 with L'Hospitalet in the second leg of their last-32 Copa del Rey clash despite Simeone putting out a strong team. Torres has had a touch, but the Spaniard was challenged by Ramos. You just get the feeling that the first goal tonight will be crucial, for confidence if nothing else.
6 minTorres collects a through pass from Godin before lifting one just wide of the post, but the Spaniard had been in an offside position. The Atletico forward looks full of running inside the opening six minutes.
8 minIt is a big night for Lucas this evening, with the 18-year-old, who is a centre-back, starting at left-back for the home side. The Frenchman has come through a couple of early tests against Bale, but Real Madrid have certainly started this match the brighter as they continue to pass and probe in the final third.
10 minKroos is dictating the tempo at the moment, with the German combining with Khedira before releasing Bale, but the Welshman just runs out of space. Atletico are down the other end with Griezmann moments later, but the Frenchman cannot move past two challenges. Still goalless with 10 mins played.
13 minNot too much to report in terms of chances in the last few moments, but the away side remain in control of the possession. Torres has proved a nuisance to the Real defence in the opening 13 minutes, but he has given away a couple of fouls, in addition to being caught on the wrong end of the linesman's flag.

Atletico manage to sustain a period of pressure, but Real Madrid clear their lines without facing a strike on goal. The match is just starting to liven up with 18 mins played.

Real Madrid attempt to break, but Suarez is across to challenge James, who is not best pleased with the decision. Still no yellow cards here.
