Result: Portugal edge out Serbia to go top of Group I

Portugal go top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group with a 2-1 win over Serbia in Lisbon.

Portugal have gone top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group with a 2-1 win over Serbia in Lisbon this evening.

Ricardo Carvalho gave the hosts the lead inside the first 10 minutes when he rose highest to head home a cross from Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao.

Carvalho's evening was short-lived however, and the Monaco centre-back was forced off on 17 minutes with a hamstring injury.

Southampton winger Dusan Tadic almost equalised, but his powerful effort flashed just wide of the post before the half-hour mark.

Cristiano Ronaldo then went close with a well-struck effort from range, but the Real Madrid forward was denied by a good save from goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic.

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic levelled things up on 61 minutes with an acrobatic effort, but their parity lasted just two minutes.

Coentrao gave the Iberian nation the lead once again when he met a cross from Joao Moutinho to convert at the back post, and Fernando Santos's men held on move above Denmark in Group I.
