Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez admits that his side's stoppage-time defeat at home to struggling Bournemouth is difficult to take.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has admitted that his side's last-gasp defeat at home to Bournemouth is difficult to take.

Steve Cook scored a 92nd-minute winner for the Cherries at St James' Park to lift Eddie Howe's side out of the relegation zone, leaving Newcastle in the bottom half in the process.

The Magpies had earlier seen a Dwight Gayle strike disallowed, but he refused to blame the officials for the defeat and acknowledged that his side should have done more.

"It's always hard when you lose a game in the last minute. I have seen [the disallowed Dwight Gayle goal] but it will not change anything. We have to understand that in these sort of games we have to do better," he told reporters.

"We have created chances in every game, you have to score. We have to keep going, we are Newcastle United, a good team that has been promoted.

"Maybe the break is good, we can keep working with the players. I was happy before the game with how we have been doing but disappointed now. It is still early."

Newcastle have not won a home match against Bournemouth since 1990.
