Ahead of Friday's World Cup clash between Netherlands and Ecuador, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between the two sides.

Netherlands and Ecuador will be looking to build on their respective opening-day victories when they square off at the Khalifa International Stadium in Group A on Friday.

Louis van Gaal's men got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start as they claimed a 2-0 victory over Senegal on Monday thanks to late goals from Davy Klaassen and Eredivisie top scorer Cody Gakpo.

Meanwhile, former West Ham United forward Enner Valencia stole the show in the World Cup opener last Sunday when he netted twice in a 15-minute spell to condemn host nation Qatar to an opening-day defeat.

Now looking to take pole position in Group A and stake a claim for a place in the knockout stages, Netherlands and Ecuador will renew acquaintances once again, with their last encounter coming in May 2014, when the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw.

In that encounter, former Swansea City forward Jefferson Montero struck nine minutes into the game to put the Tricolor ahead but Robin van Persie restored parity in the 38th minute to end the friendly match all square at the Amsterdam Arena.

The only previous meeting between the two nations came eight years before, when Netherlands secured a narrow 1-0 victory in March 2006 thanks to a second-half effort from former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt.

The Oranje head into Friday unbeaten in 16 straight matches across all competitions, claiming 12 wins and four draws since June's 2-0 loss against Czech Republic at Euro 2022, and are heavily fancied to see off an Ecuador side 36 places below them in the world.
