Brentford prepare for Bryan Mbeumo's potential departure by targeting a promising replacement from Ipswich Town. Could Omari Hutchinson be the key to unlocking Manchester United's transfer deal?
Manchester United are currently focused on securing the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, but negotiations are dragging on. As expected, Brentford are playing hardball, pushing for a higher fee for their star man. However, the Bees may already have a replacement lined up — a former Chelsea prospect who suffered relegation with Ipswich Town last season.
Following their Europa League final defeat, United have accepted they will not be able to spend upwards of £250m this summer. Instead, they are targeting two marquee signings and a handful of smart deals. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves for more than £62.5m, and Mbeumo is now the next name on their list. Both were standout performers for their respective clubs last season and are seen as key to revitalising United’s struggling attack.
Mbeumo negotiations with Manchester United are dragging on
However, the Mbeumo deal is proving difficult. Brentford are reportedly dragging out the negotiations and increasing the asking price with each approach. United have consistently been a few million short of Brentford’s valuation, and each time an offer is submitted, the west London club responds by raising the price. What started as a £50m proposal has now climbed to around £65m.
There may be some hope for United, though. Reports suggest Brentford are lining up a replacement for their Cameroonian international — and it could benefit the Red Devils if a deal materialises.
Hutchinson to replace Mbeumo?
That replacement could be Omari Hutchinson, once regarded as one of Chelsea’s brightest young prospects. The winger joined Ipswich Town on loan last season and played a crucial role in their surprise promotion push. After securing Premier League football, Ipswich signed Hutchinson permanently for a club-record fee of £22,5m.
Despite his promise, Hutchinson and Ipswich struggled in the top flight, with the 21-year-old registering just three goals and two assists in a side that eventually went back down. While his contribution fell short of expectations, his talent remains unquestioned. He also impressed at the U21 European Championship, adding to his growing reputation.
Brentford are yet to open formal talks with Ipswich, but a move to stay in the Premier League could appeal to Hutchinson. Ipswich, now back in the Championship, may struggle to keep hold of their most talented players. Should Brentford make a move, it could open the door for Manchester United to finally land Mbeumo.
