Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville backs the club to bridge the current 37-point gap on Liverpool next season and challenge for the Premier League title.

Gary Neville has insisted that he is "confident" Manchester United can challenge Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title next season.

The Red Devils are down in fifth place and 37 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool with nine games of the 2019-20 campaign to play.

However, United hit a good run of form prior to the coronavirus-enforced shutdown in March and have been tipped to further strengthen their squad when the transfer window opens.

Neville is confident that his former club can bridge the gap on the sides above them next season, telling Sky Sports News: "United have found it hard to keep prices and wages down but they will be in a really strong position to hold their nerve this summer.

"It will be really important, they had found some form before this and the glass looked half full than half empty and being 30 points or whatever it is off Liverpool. I am starting to feel confident United could challenge next season.

"They need to add three of four quality players to that and United will be able to capitalise on the market this summer, to do some business."

United beat LASK 5-0 in their most recent match eight weeks ago to make it 11 games without defeat in all competitions.
