Manchester United could be without both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw for Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield due to injuries.

Manchester United are facing the possibility of being without both Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw for Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

Maguire pulled up in the latter stages of the first period against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening, with the defender immediately signalling to the bench that he had suffered a problem.

The centre-back's issue appeared to be related to his groin, and the injury forced Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag into a change, with Jonny Evans entering the field.

Shaw, meanwhile, was substituted at the interval due to an apparent hamstring problem, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka his replacement off the bench.

The left-back has only just returned from a three-month absence due to a muscular injury, and he could now potentially be missing for the festive period, although Ten Hag was unable to give an update on their conditions after the 1-0 loss to Bayern in the Champions League.

"I can't say in this moment," Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "We obviously have to wait 24 hours and then we will have an assessment and diagnosis so we have to wait for it."

Due to the nature of the issues, it seems to be highly unlikely that either will be available for Sunday's trip to Liverpool in the Premier League, when the team will be aiming to avoid a third successive loss.

Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Amad Diallo are also all out of action due to injury problems.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils will be without their captain Bruno Fernandes this weekend, with the Portugal international picking up a milestone yellow card in the defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The loss to Bayern saw Man United finish bottom of Group A, with the team exiting Europe altogether this season, and Ten Hag admitted that he lacked options on Tuesday, with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford also both missing due to illness.

"That's clear. The players gave everything – you saw the spirit and, as I said, I have to credit the team; big compliment for the way they worked together as a team against this good Bayern side," he said.

"But, of course, when the game is going, you need energy from the bench, and especially in the frontline, the options were limited."

Both Martial and Rashford are expected to recover from their issues in time to take on Liverpool, while Mount and Lindelof could also potentially boost the squad for the trip to Anfield.
