The fact that Richard Dunne holds both the Premier League record for most red cards (8) and most own goals (10) suggests that he should not be so high up on this list, but during his nine-year Manchester City career there was far more evidence of his quality than his penchant for mistakes.

Dunne suffered relegation from the Premier League in his first season at the club, but he then helped them to bounce straight back and consolidate their position in the top flight, where they have stayed ever since.

The Republic of Ireland international looked to be on his way out of the club in 2003, but he turned his City career around and by 2006 had taken over the captain's armband.

Dunne remains the only player in Man City history to win the club's Player of the Year award four times, doing so in successive seasons from 2005 to 2008.

By the time he left the club for Aston Villa in 2010, Dunne had made almost 300 league appearances and more than 350 across all competitions, scoring seven goals.
