The circumstances surrounding Javier Mascherano's switch to English football with West Ham United in 2006 were confusing, but the fact that the Argentine made just seven appearances across all competitions for the Hammers was truly baffling.

West Ham's loss was soon to be Liverpool's gain, though, and after initially joining the Reds on loan in February 2007 he quickly established himself as a first-team regular and went on to be named Liverpool's man of the match in the Champions League final that year.

Having made his Anfield move permanent in an £18.6m deal in 2008, Mascherano formed a world-class midfield partnership with Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard which helped Liverpool to second place in the 2008-09 Premier League campaign.

The former Argentina captain decided to leave the club in 2010, though, joining Barcelona having made 139 appearances for the Reds in all competitions.
