Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers explains why he left James Maddison out of the starting lineup for the midweek encounter with Burnley.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has explained his decision to drop James Maddison from the starting lineup against Burnley on Wednesday.

The attacking midfielder was introduced to the match as a substitute in the 72nd minute, replacing Youri Tielemans, and he quickly made an impact by opening the scoring.

The Foxes would eventually go on to win 2-0, as Jamie Vardy added a goal of his own, but it was the defensive side of their game that led to the 25-year-old missing out on a place in the first XI.

"I just felt we needed that physicality, especially early on in the game. With Ki (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall) pressing, he can get up there, and gives us that extra man in midfield. Then introducing him (Maddison) into the game," Rodgers told the press.

"Some of the problems we have had, we have not pressed the game well enough at the top end of the field and that has allowed too many opportunities. Sometimes it has been great with the ball, but not so good without it."

Maddison has played 24 times in the Premier League this season, scoring seven goals in the process, with the Foxes set to face Leeds United on Saturday in their next outing.
