Championship 2024-25 fixtures confirmed: Luton Town, Burnley to meet in first game

Luton Town and Burnley - two clubs relegated from the Premier League - will square off on the opening day of the 2024-25 Championship season.

The Hatters and Clarets finished comfortably above Sheffield United in the top flight last season, only to fail to close down Nottingham Forest during the run-in.

However, they will not have to wait to renew acquaintances as they meet on the first day of next season's second tier, the encounter at Kenilworth Road taking place on August 12.

That fixture is the final game of matchday one, with Sheffield United's trip to Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers' meeting with Derby County kicking off the campaign on Friday, August 9.

Who plays who on the first Saturday?

On the following day, the pick of the matches is last season's playoff finalists Leeds United meeting League One champions Portsmouth at Elland Road.

Oxford United mark their long-awaited return to the division by facing Norwich City, while West Bromwich Albion make the trip to Loftus Road to take on Queens Park Rangers.

Sunderland make the long journey to South Wales to meet Cardiff City, with Swansea City travelling in the opposite direction to play Middlesbrough.

Hull City go up against Bristol City at the MKM Stadium, Millwall welcome Watford to The Den, and Stoke City meet Coventry in the Potteries.

What other standout fixtures have been announced?

Leeds' trip to The Hawthorns to face West Brom is the undoubted standout game of matchday two, with it yet to be confirmed which fixtures will be moved from the currently-set August 17 date.

Daniel Farke's team again take centre stage a week later with their first Yorkshire derby of the campaign at the home of Sheffield Wednesday. Swansea and Cardiff also meet on the same weekend.

Staying on the theme of derbies, Burnley and Blackburn play at Turf Moor in a game currently set for August 31, Portsmouth and Sunderland also meeting in what was a common Premier League fixture in years gone by.

On Boxing Day, Sheffield United and Burnley square off at Bramall Lane in what could prove to be a crucial game in the race for promotion, while Derby and Leeds' tussle at Pride Park is the notable game for three days later.

The season will conclude on May 3, with West Brom's meeting with Luton looking the most attractive fixture when it comes to two promotion rivals potentially facing off.
