Fabio Cannavaro is reportedly regarded as a potential candidate to replace Italy boss Roberto Mancini after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The Italian Football Federation may reportedly consider appointing Fabio Cannavaro if Roberto Mancini departs his role as manager.

On Thursday night, Italy suffered a surprise defeat to North Macedonia in the World Cup playoffs, meaning that the European champions have missed out on a place in Qatar.

When commenting on the disappointment, Mancini said that he currently did not feel in a position to make a decision on his future.

However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Cannavaro will feature on a shortlist of potential replacements if Mancini departs his position.

The former centre-back lifted the World Cup as Italy captain in 2006, and he has since gone on to have five managerial positions, his biggest achievement coming in the form of the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou Evergrande in 2019.

The 48-year-old is back in Europe with the intent of acquiring a role on the continent.
