Ipswich boss Paul Hurst admitted he was a relieved man as his side claimed their first Championship win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 success at Swansea.
Trevoh Chalobah was the hero for the visitors as he headed home Grant Ward’s corner to settle a topsy-turvy encounter in the 84th minute.
Swansea went ahead through a Janoi Donacien own goal, but Ipswich equalised through Gwion Edwards and then benefited further as Mike van der Hoorn put through his own net.
In the second half Swansea were dominant and finally equalised through former Ipswich man Bersant Celina. There was still time, though, for Chalobah to net the crucial blow.
Hurst said: “It’s been a long wait for a win and it was probably unexpected with us coming here as huge underdogs. Not many people would have expected this result.
“The last few minutes felt like hours and it’s a big relief. I have to give credit to the players and we rode our luck at times, but I’m not complaining.
“I felt we looked like we’d score goals and Freddie Sears is a very clever player who had a great game. It’s massive for us to get a win going into the international break.
“I’d rather we carried on, but I’m not sure about the players as they’re knackered.
“A few of the lads are saying that’s one of the hardest games they’ve played, but I’m not going to take anything away from Swansea. I think they’re a very, very good team.
“We can stop asking the question about when that victory’s going to come now and I really hope we don’t have to wait as long next time to have this sort of feeling.”
Swansea had 74 per cent possession and 18 attempts on goal.
Dan James was their main threat in attack and Donacien put Connor Roberts’ pass into his own net.
Defensive mistakes then cost them dear.
Edwards headed home a cross from the excellent Sears and Van der Hoorn then made it two own goals for the afternoon.
Swansea were dominant in the second half. Joe Rodon hit the bar before Celina finished off a length-of-the-field move.
It looked like sealing a draw, but Chalobah rose highest to have the last laugh.
Boss Graham Potter said: “It was not our day. We started very well, got the goal, and we did a lot of things right.
“We had so many opportunities to score, but if you concede three goals it’s very hard to win football matches and that’s cost us, even though some of our attacking play was very good.
“Dan was very good and he can be pleased with his afternoon’s work, but as a team we are still a work in progress and we will learn from this experience.”
Swansea defender Rodon has been called up to the Wales squad for their friendly clash with Spain on Thursday and Potter added: “We kept going throughout. Ipswich always carried a threat on the transition, but the spirit the players showed was pleasing.
“We got ourselves back in the game so then to concede a third goal in the manner that we did was obviously disappointing.”
