Patrice Evra says that France's supporters 'can be proud' of the team's performance during Friday's 2-1 win over Romania in Euro 2016's opening match.

France defender Patrice Evra has claimed that his country's supporters 'can be proud' of the team's performance during Friday's 2-1 win over Romania in Euro 2016's opening match.

Bogdan Stancu cancelled out an Olivier Giroud opener to leave the two teams level entering the final minutes in Paris, but Dimitri Payet struck an 89th-minute winner to secure all the points for France.

"France have not played in official matches for two years, there was a lot of apprehension. If you see my interviews before the competition started, I said I want the fans to be proud of this team. And I think they can be proud tonight," Evra told reporters.

"We were very shy in the first half. But we must still congratulate the Romanian team. I think there are many people who thought it was going to be easy, but the coach [Didier Deschamps] had warned us."

Next up for the hosts is their second Group A clash against Albania on June 15.
