Derby County defender Stephen Warnock drops down a division to join Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

League One promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic have secured the loan signing of former England defender Stephen Warnock from Derby County.

The 34-year-old left-back has joined the Latics for the rest of the season having lost his place with the Rams in recent weeks under Darren Wassall since Paul Clement's departure.

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell was delighted with the signing, telling the club website: "The opportunity to bring in a player with [Warnock's] quality and experience is a great signing for the rest of season. When we found out Stephen was available it really was a no-brainer.

"He has vast experience having played extensively at the very top level, but he also has great Football League experience in recent years and I think he will really help the squad at a vital time of the season."

Warnock will wear No.22 for Wigan, who are second in League One, four points behind leaders Burton Albion.

Everton's English striker Conor McAleny controls the ball during the Duncan Ferguson Testimonal pre-season friendly football match between Everton and Villarreal at Goodison Park in Liverpool, north west England on August 2, 2015.
