Michy Batshuayi: 'Antonio Conte fooled me at Chelsea'

Michy Batshuayi suggests that he felt "fooled" into believing that he would become a first-team regular at Chelsea under Antonio Conte.

Michy Batshuayi has reiterated his frustration at working under Antonio Conte during his time at Chelsea.

On the back of netting 23 goals for Marseille during the 2015-16 campaign, Batshuayi earned a £33.2m transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea won the Premier League title during Batshuayi's first year in West London, the Belgium international scoring a goal at West Bromwich Albion which secured the top-flight crown.

However, Batshuayi was provided with just 235 minutes of Premier League football by Conte during that campaign, those minutes spread over 20 appearances.

Conte instead preferred to use Diego Costa as a lone central striker supported by two wingers, rather than deploy two forwards like he had in previous jobs.

Batshuayi's game time would improve in his second season at Chelsea, making 12 outings totalling 353 minutes before departing for Borussia Dortmund on loan in January 2018.

Speaking to Belgian outlet SPORT, the 28-year-old has again spoken of his unhappy 18-month period playing under Conte, who is now at Tottenham Hotspur.

Batshuayi said: "Conte was constantly contradicting himself. To start with my arrival. He called me and explained his project. He wanted me to play in a two-man frontline alongside Diego Costa.

"Did I believe that? Of course, because Conte has played with two attackers all his career. Except at Chelsea with me. I do not understand. The truth is that I have been fooled far too often."

Although Batshuayi went on to score 25 goals in 77 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, he has spent five periods away from the club on loan.

His first stint at Dortmund was the most productive, Batshuayi contributing nine goals from 14 matches, while further spells have come at Valencia, Crystal Palace on two occasions and Besiktas.

Earlier this month, his six-year period at Chelsea officially came to an end when he penned a two-year contract with Fenerbahce.

One goal has been netted in his opening three appearances, and the well-travelled frontman is expected to lead the line against Wales in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday evening.
