A reunion of 2018 World Cup semi-final foes headlines the Euro 2024 last-16 ties, as France and Belgium cross paths in Dusseldorf on Monday evening.

Neither nation showed what they are truly capable of in the group phase, being condemned to unexpected second-placed finishes owing to disappointing final-day draws.

We say: France 1-0 Belgium

While both managers possess an enviable amount of attacking firepower, neither offence has clicked into gear at the Euros, giving rise to a dull affair where defences should come out on top for the most part.

However, Belgium were highly fortunate not to end up on the losing side and suffer elimination at the hands of Ukraine, and if there is to be a solitary strike in the 90 minutes, it should go to the men in blue.

Portugal vs. Slovenia (Monday, 8.00pm)

After seeing a long success streak ended in the group stage, Portugal will aim to prove their credentials as Euro 2024 champions when they meet Slovenia on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, the Slovenians arrive in Frankfurt for their first knockout match at a major tournament, and they will fight for the right to face France or Belgium in the quarter-finals.

We say: Portugal 2-0 Slovenia

Providing Roberto Martinez opts against more experimentation with tactics and personnel, Portugal should have too much firepower for a hard-working Slovenia side to handle.

Now that most Portuguese players have had a taste of the action, even a tightly-packed defence can be overcome by a series of fresh-legged substitutes.
