Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is reportedly open to a move to West Ham United after informing the Catalan giants that he wants to leave Camp Nou.

West Ham United have reportedly made an approach to sign Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The Belgian international is said to have requested a transfer away from Camp Nou after falling down the pecking order in Spain, but it is claimed that only Roma have made a bid for his signature.

According to Sport, West Ham have signalled their interest in the former Arsenal man but they are yet to follow up their initial approach.

Vermaelen is said to favour a return to the Premier League and a switch to East London would appeal to him, but it is alleged that the Hammers are yet to decide whether to gamble on a player who has been restricted to 20 appearances in two years at Barcelona.

The 30-year-old played four times during Belgium's run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.
