Barcelona travelled to Valencia on Saturday knowing that three points would take them to the top of La Liga.
An intense first 45 minutes, which brought three yellow cards, was decided by one goal as Lionel Messi struck in the 22nd minute to hand Barcelona the advantage.
Valencia turned the game around early in the second period, however, as goals from on-loan Barcelona forward Munir El-Haddadi and Rodrigo Moreno sent the home side into a 2-1 lead.
Luis Suarez then levelled the scores just past the hour for 2-2, before Messi won it for Barcelona with a penalty in the 94th minute of action.
