Aston Villa are allegedly among the clubs that are contemplating an approach for Rennes defender Adrien Truffert.
Having missed out on Champions League football, Villa face the prospect of looking for added value in the market as they bid to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability regulations.
As such, it is plausible to expect the West Midlands outfit to target players with just a year remaining on their contract, and L'Equipe reports that a player such as Truffert is on their radar.
A total of nine goals and 23 assists have come from his 191 appearances for Rennes, but a poor campaign for his current club could lead to a new challenge being sought at this stage of his career.
If Villa did move for Truffert, it would throw the future of either Lucas Digne or Ian Maatsen into doubt given their current status at the club.
Marseille are also said to be monitoring the situation as they consider how to strengthen their ranks ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Marseille chasing Premier League defender
Staying on the subject of Marseille, they are also allegedly interested in negotiating a deal for West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd.
The 29-year-old has just spent the season on loan at Real Sociedad where he made 34 starts and two substitute outings in all competitions.
Although the Morocco international will now return to the London Stadium, it is questionable whether he will be integrated into Graham Potter's squad.
As per Foot Mercato, Aguerd has been made a priority target by Marseille as they look to make at least one defensive addition during the summer.
Aguerd is reportedly open to returning to Ligue 1, where he has previously represented Rennes, but he is said to also have admirers in Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.

Wolves remain in race for Argentine prospect
Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly retained an interest in adding another South American starlet to their ranks.
In recent weeks, the West Midlands outfit have been credited with an interest in Velez Sarsfield youngster Thiago Silvero, a player who remains wanted by his Argentine club.
According to Pasion Fortinera, Wolves have opted to make a fresh offer that is said to be in the region of £5m.
As it stands, it is unclear whether Velez will be prepared to cash in at that price, even with the 19-year-old having only made seven first-team appearances.
The Argentina Under-20 international's contract is due to expire in December 2026, giving Velez plenty of time to make a decision over the prospect.
