Mikel Arteta admits that Arsenal's defensive errors were "punished" during a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday's Mind Series friendly.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that the Gunners were "punished" for their mistakes during their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Gunners dominated proceedings for large portions of the encounter but could not find the breakthrough, with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both wasting opportunities.

Spurs won the game through a 79th-minute winner from Son Heung-min, and Arteta admitted that his side were "disorganised" defensively at points of the encounter.

"It was a great test to play that type of game before starting [the season]," Arteta told reporters at a press conference. "I think the game had different phases, 10 minutes when we had some problems with our high press and we were a little bit disorganised, after that we got control of the game and dominated it.

"We had some big chances but didn't score and they had one big chance and they didn't score. Second half it was very interrupted with the amount of substitutions that happened so to get a flow in the game is more difficult and the game was decided in an action where we made a mistake and we got punished."

Arsenal have ended the pre-season period with three defeats to Tottenham, Chelsea and Hibernian, with their Premier League campaign set to begin on Friday against newly-promoted Brentford.
