Arsenal team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Southampton

Sports Mole rounds up Arsenal's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Thursday's Premier League clash with Southampton.

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back from their latest damaging defeat when they take on Southampton at St Mary's on Thursday evening.

Mikel Arteta's side were unbeaten in the league this calendar year prior to lockdown, but since the return to action they have lost both games - against Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Two goals in the final 15 minutes - including a 95th-minute winner - saw Arsenal slump to a loss at the hands of Brighton on Saturday, leaving them now in 10th place and 11 points adrift of the top four.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up all of the Gunners' latest injury and suspension news ahead of another trip to the South Coast.

Bernd Leno

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Arsenal's defeat to Brighton was compounded by a serious-looking knee injury suffered by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who has arguably been their best player this season. The German could now miss the remainder of the campaign.

Granit Xhaka

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: July 4 (vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Granit Xhaka suffered a sprained ankle within seven minutes of the first game back and may be ruled out for the remainder of June, with a recovery period of two weeks being estimated.

Pablo Mari

Possible return date: Unknown

Arsenal have suffered a miserable return to action both in terms of form and fitness, with Pablo Mari also being forced off against Man City due to a "significant" ankle injury.

Possible return date: July 4 (vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Sokratis is struggling with a mild thigh strain which is expected to keep him out of training for another two weeks, having missed both games back so far.

Lucas Torreira

Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: July 7 (vs. Leicester City)

Lucas Torreira is closing in on a return from the fractured ankle he sustained before lockdown, but this match will come too soon for him.

Calum Chambers

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Even with the three-month stoppage, Calum Chambers will still miss the remainder of the season, having sustained knee ligament damage at the end of last year.

Cedric Soares

Status: Out
Type of injury: Facial
Possible return date: July 4 (vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Like a number of his teammates, Cedric Soares is expected back in training in the next fortnight, having undergone a procedure on a broken nose he sustained in training. Even if he was fit, the Southampton loanee would be ineligible against his parent club.

ARSENAL'S SUSPENSION LIST

David Luiz

David Luiz will serve the second match of his ban following the red card in his catastrophic cameo against Man City, and with his contract expiring at the end of the month it remains uncertain whether he will play for the club again.
