The White Lotus creator Mike White has hinted at what a potential third season could entail.
The darkly comedic anthology series returns for a second season next month, relocating from Hawaii to Sicily with an entirely new cast - save for Jennifer Coolidge, who reprises her role as Tanya McQuoid from the first season.
The show was originally envisaged as a one-off miniseries, but the surprise success led to a second season being ordered, and now White has revealed a potential storyline idea that he passed on but could revisit.
"I might still do it down the road maybe, if they give us a third season, so I don't know if I should say," he told EW.
"Originally, it was more of like a Bilderberg conference, more about getting into some of the bigger power dynamics there. But Sicily was a totally different vibe than the idea I pitched. That didn't seem right."
He added: "The kind of mythology of Sicily, at least from the point of view of Americans, is the archetypal sexual politics and role play that you associate with, like, opera and the mafia and Italian romance.
"I felt like it should be more focused on men and women and relationships and adultery and have an operatic feel to it, so I pivoted."
The White Lotus: Sicily begins October 30 on HBO in the US, with a UK simulcast airing on Sky Atlantic.
